Zach Ertz Player Overview

What You Need to Know:

  • Ertz posted an 88-916-6 line and top-5 fantasy finish last season.
  • He’s now been a top-5 TE 3 straight years.
  • The Eagles bolstered their WR corps this offseason, but Ertz should remain a big part of the passing game.

Another top-5 finish

Ertz is coming off another big season: 135 targets, 88 catches, 916 yards and 6 TDs in 15 games. He ranked top 4 among TEs in all 4 of those stat categories and finished 4th at the position in PPR points and 5th in non-PPR.

That marked Ertz’s 3rd straight top 5 fantasy season. He ranks 2nd behind only Travis Kelce with 278 receptions and 22 TDs over that stretch. Ertz’s 2,903 yards are good for 3rd behind Kelce and George Kittle. He sits 2nd behind Kelce in both PPR and non-PPR fantasy points over the past 3 years.

And Ertz has been efficient. He ranked 4th among 31 qualifying TEs in yards per route run in 2017, 4th out of 28 in 2018 and 10th out of 35 last year.

It’s worth noting that Ertz benefitted from a rash of injuries to Eagles WRs last year. Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson and Nelson Agholor missed a combined 24 games. Ertz averaged 8.3 targets over his first 9 games. That jumped to 10 over his final 6, with all 3 of those WRs out for all or most of that time.

2020 outlook

Ertz figures to face more competition this year. Jeffery is iffy for the start of the season after December Lisfranc surgery and Agholor left for Las Vegas. But Jackson is back. 2019 second-rounder J.J. Arcega-Whiteside is capable of taking a step forward in his 2nd season. And Philly added rookies Jalen Reagor, John Hightower and Quez Watkins — plus veteran Marquise Goodwin. TE Dallas Goedert is also coming off a breakout sophomore campaign.

Yet we’re not expecting Ertz’s volume to take a major hit. He’s simply been too important to this passing game for too long to expect anything else. Here are his target shares for games he has played over the…
