With Thomas Davis gone to the Chargers, Thompson in 2019 finally got his 1st shot at full-time starting in his 5th season. He fared solidly, ranking 29th among LBs in fantasy points per game and 19th in tackles per game. He graded out that way as well: Pro Football Focus graded Thompson 31st among 100 LBs who played at least 227 snaps.
Luke Kuechly's offseason retirement figures to leave some tackles available. Likely MLB replacement Tahir Whitehead is a replacement-level player at best.
So Thompson hits 2020 with upside beyond his 2019 tackle numbers. He should also benefit from the Panthers drafting 325-pound DT Derrick Brown 7th overall and getting DT Kawann Short back from a shoulder injury. A new defensive scheme under a new coaching staff adds a question mark. But the tackles should come, regardless of exactly where Thompson lines up on the field.
