-- Watkins reworked his contract this offseason to stay with the Chiefs.
-- He generated more than a third of last year’s fantasy points in Week 1.
-- Watkins has fallen short of 10 PPR points per game 2 of the past 3 years.
-- His yards per catch have fallen 4 straight seasons.
If the Chiefs wanted to unload Watkins after last season and create room for other receivers, they could have.
Watkins began the offseason with just a non-guaranteed year at $14 million left on his contract. But rather than dump him, the team worked out a new 1-year deal with the veteran -- with a $7 million base salary, incentives up to $16 million and a no-trade clause.
So Watkins isn’t going anywhere until at least next spring, when he’s due to hit free agency at just 27. (Yes, really just 27 until next June.) But what can we expect from his 3rd year with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs?
Watkins started huge last year, with a 9-198-3 line against the Jaguars. That 46.8-point PPR outing would account for 34% of his scoring for the season, though. Watkins didn’t find the end zone again (at least with the ball in his hands) until the playoffs. He didn’t reach 70 yards in a game again until the playoffs. And in 1 stretch, he went 6 consecutive games without reaching 10 PPR points.
By Pro Football Focus grading, Watkins didn’t seem to play much worse in 2019 than in 2018, but Football Outsiders metrics said something much different.
Another part of the problem has been the Chiefs using Watkins differently from how his previous employers did. Check out Watkins’ annual average depths of target:
