Sam Darnold Player Overview

What You Need To Know:

  • Darnold ranked outside the top-25 QBs in points per game in 2019. He missed 3 games due to mono.
  • He was working with a thin pass-catching corps and one of the league’s worst pass-blocking O-lines.
  • While the Jets bolstered the WR corps with big-play talents Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims, volume and consistency remain concerns here.

No breakout yet

Darnold entered his second season at just 22 years old. While he showed improvement under new HC Adam Gase, he remained untrustworthy in fantasy.

Across 13 starts, the USC product racked up 3,024 yards (232.6 per game), 19 TDs and 13 picks. He reached 300 yards only twice but tallied a QB1 line on 4 occasions.

Not bad considering some unfortunate circumstances.

Darnold missed 3 early-season games due to mono. He picked up a new offense alongside a thin receiving corps behind Robby Anderson and Jamison Crowder. An ineffective Le’Veon Bell ranked third on the team in targets; a currently unemployed Demaryius Thomas sat fourth.

The O-line wasn’t up to the task, either. Pro Football Focus graded the unit 28th in pass blocking. Also per PFF, they surrendered pressure in 2.5 seconds or less on 27.5% of team dropbacks (second-highest figure league-wide).

When protected, PFF’s data shows that Darnold can get the job done. From clean pockets, he ranked 6th among 30 qualifiers with an 81.3% adjusted completion rate. Kirk Cousins was the league leader there, not too far ahead at 83.0%.

New pieces

The Jets return HC Adam Gase and OC Dowell Loggains, but the guys on the field will look quite different this fall.

Gone is deep threat Robby Anderson. In his place is Breshad Perriman, a less proven version of the guy he’s replacing. We at least saw some upside in a depleted Bucs WR corps last year, as Perriman notched 70+ yards in 5 straight —plus 5 scores.

But can he put it together over a full season? And what will happen when…
