Matt Ryan Player Overview

What You Need to Know:

-- Ryan’s performance and production declined by multiple measures last season.

-- He still delivered his 4th top-10 fantasy finish in 4 years under OC Dirk Koetter.

-- Atlanta has ranked 8th, 3rd, 3rd and 1st in pass attempts under Koetter.

-- The Falcons swapped out their lead TE and lead RB.

Ryan is about as non-descript a “good” fantasy QB as you could hope to build.

He climbed to 10th among QBs in fantasy points in his 3rd season, 2010. He has finished just 2 of the 9 years since outside fantasy’s top 10. That span has included 4 seasons under OC Dirk Koetter, who ran the offense from 2012-14 and then returned to do so last year after the Buccaneers fired him from his HC post.

Ryan has finished his 4 Koetter seasons 6th, 10th, 7th and 8th in fantasy scoring -- the #8 finish coming last season.

But Ryan also finished among the top 12 fantasy QBs in just 8 of the 15 weeks he played last year. That included only 2 finishes higher than 7th and just one higher than 12th after his return from a Week 7 ankle sprain. Over that span, of course, Ryan also played without Mohamed Sanu (traded) and lost Calvin Ridley and Austin Hooper for 3 games apiece.

Koetter Influence

Ryan has had good fantasy seasons without Koetter as OC. But he has gone 4-for-4 with top-10 finishes under Koetter; 4-for-8 on top-10s in non-Koetter seasons.

The once-and-again coordinator hasn’t proved good for Ryan’s efficiency. The QB delivered his top 2 completion rates, top 2 TD rates and top 3 yards-per-attempt marks in years without Koetter. Ryan has produced TD rates of 4.5% or lower in 3 of 4 Koetter seasons. That mark would have tied Gardner Minshew and Case Keenum for 15th among qualifiers last year.

But the coach has certainly helped volume. The Falcons have ranked 8th, 3rd, 3rd and 1st in the NFL in pass attempts in Koetter’s 4 seasons there. Ryan led the league in completions last…
