After serving a 4-game suspension for PED use in 2018, Edelman rebounded to play a full campaign in 2019. Fed 153 targets, Edelman reached 100 catches, a career-high 1,117 yards and 6 scores.
It was enough to finish as the WR8 in PPR.
Of course, the Pats really needed Edelman to handle a hefty workload. Rob Gronkowski retired, while the team received little from rookie 1st-rounder N’Keal Harry and late-season add Mohamed Sanu.
Sure enough, Edelman’s 25% target share was topped by only 5 WRs. That produced a consistent stream of fantasy points; 10+ in all but 3 games during the fantasy season (Weeks 1-16).
Outside of James White, he was perhaps the only target truly trusted by Tom Brady.
Now with the future Hall of Famer in Tampa Bay, how should we alter Edelman’s value?
Losing a guy you’ve played with since 2009 clearly stings. You know about their trust and rapport on game days.
Edelman will start from scratch with new starter Jarrett Stidham. Beyond that, Stidham’s on-field play is a major wild card after barely seeing the field as a 2019 rookie. He showed promise at Auburn in 2017 before taking a major step back in 2018. In fairness, the 2018 Tigers lacked the firepower of the 2017 unit, as Stidham broke in a brand new O-line and a WR corps that lost 2 starters to season-ending injuries.
The fact that New England didn’t draft or sign a QB signals major trust in the 2nd-year passer.
