Jamaal Williams Player Overview

What You Need to Know:

  • Williams averaged 8.2 carries and 3.4 targets in 13 healthy games last year.
  • He finished as a top 36 PPR RB in 9 of those 13 games.
  • Williams should play a similar role in the passing game in 2020, but his rushing volume is threatened by 2nd-round rookie A.J. Dillon.

2019 in review

He was overshadowed by backfield mate Aaron Jones, but Williams had a fine 2019 season. He took 107 carries for 460 yards (4.3 YPC) and a TD and hauled in 39 of 45 targets (86.7%) for 253 yards (6.5 YPC) and 5 scores.

And he did it in what was essentially 13 games. Williams was knocked out on his 1st snap of Week 4 with a concussion and missed the following game. Then he missed Week 17 with a shoulder injury.

The gap in volume between Williams and Jones in those 13 games wasn’t as large as you probably think. Jones led the way with 13.8 carries and 3.6 targets per game — but Williams wasn’t far behind at 8.2 carries and 3.4 targets. The biggest difference in fantasy production came in the TD department. While Williams scored 6 times in those 13 games, Jones racked up 14.

Still, Williams’ 11.2 PPR-point average in his 13 healthy games ranked 34th among RBs. His 8.3 non-PPR points per game was good for 42nd. He scored as a top 36 PPR RB in 9 of those 13 games (69%), including 5 top-13 finishes.

2020 outlook

Williams will face new competition in 2020 after the Packers spent a 2nd-round pick on RB A.J. Dillon. The Boston College product didn’t impress us on tape. But he did average 1,461 yards and 12.7 TDs per year on 5.2 yards per carry over 3 college seasons. He goes 6’0, 247 pounds and blazed a 4.53-second 40 time with strong marks in the vertical and broad jumps to earn a 97th-percentile SPARQ score. Considering the draft capital invested in him, the Packers are obviously hoping Dillon can make an immediate impact.

That impact won’t come in the passing game, thou…
