2019 in Review

Last season opened with 2 games of not-really-Cam Newton at QB, then coughed up 12 Kyle Allen starts plus an ugly 2-game cameo by Will Grier. Those guys played so well that Carolina then traded Allen for a 5th-round pick and signed 2 new QBs (Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker).

Pro Football Focus graded all 3 Carolina QBs outside the top 45 in passing. Football Outsiders rated Allen 32nd in passing DVOA among 34 qualifiers. The group combined to rank just 28th in fantasy points.

And yet Moore spent the same time breaking out.

Volume helped. The Panthers attempted the league’s 2nd most passes (633) en route to their 5-11 finish. Moore ranked just 14th among WRs in target share (21.3%) but finished 10th in targets (135), 10th in catches (87) and 8th in receiving yards (1,175).

After reaching 9 targets just once in his rookie year, Moore collected 10+ targets in 8 of his 15 games as an NFL sophomore. His 2nd half featured a 7-game stretch of 75+ yards each week, including 4 outings of 100+.


Changes

Carolina’s offense will look quite a bit different next time it takes the field. Bridgewater takes over behind center and might be the most accurate passer in franchise history. He ranked 3rd last season in PFF’s adjusted completion rate among multi-game starters, behind only Drew Brees and Derek Carr. Bridgewater had also previously won in that category, ranking 4th as a 2014 rookie (who started 12 games) and then 2nd in 2015, behind only Bengals 3-game starter A.J. McCarron.
