Amendola was a useful addition for the Lions last season. He ranked 2nd on the team with 97 targets and 62 catches — although Marvin Jones averaged more targets and catches per game.
Amendola hauled in a decent 63.9% of his targets and averaged 10.9 yards per catch as Detroit’s short-range receiver. He played 71.5% of his snaps from the slot and registered an 8.8-yard average depth of target. Amendola ranked 50th in yards per route run among 79 WRs with 50+ targets last year.
It didn’t translate to much fantasy value, though. Amendola finished 51st at his position in PPR points and 62nd in non-PPR points per game.
The biggest culprit was his 1 TD. That tied for 96th among WRs, despite Amendola finishing 32nd in catches and 44th in receiving yards. You might argue that he’s in for positive regression in that department — and he probably is. But Amendola has never been a big TD producer. He’s never topped 4 TDs in a season and averaged just 2.5 per 16 games over his first 10 seasons. Even at his 4.1% TD rate across those 10 seasons, he would have scored only 2.6 times in 2019.
It is worth noting, at least, that 2019 marked the first time in his career that Amendola saw multiple red-zone targets (9) without scoring a TD in that range, according to Pro Football Reference.
Any bump in TD production might be offset by a loss of targets. Jones missed the final 3 games of 2019 but will be back to 100% for this season. TE T.J. Hockenson should be in for a bigger role in his 2nd year. And we’ll likely see more targets go to the RBs after Detroit ad…
