Antonio Gibson Player Overview

What You Need to Know:

  • Gibson totaled just 77 touches as a RB/WR hybrid at Memphis over the past 2 seasons but ripped off 19.0 yards per catch and 11.2 yards per carry.
  • The 6’0, 228-pounder tested as an 83rd-percentile athlete at the Combine and went to Washington with the 66th overall pick of the draft.
  • He joins a crowded backfield alongside Derrius Guice, Antonio Gibson, Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic — but Gibson’s unique skill set might help him carve out a role.

The next CMC?

Comparing anyone to Christian McCaffrey is aggressive. A 3rd-round rookie? Ridiculous.

But that’s exactly what Redskins HC Ron Rivera did shortly after his team selected Gibson.

“He's a little bit bigger than Christian, but he's got a skill set like Christian,” said Rivera, who spent the past 3 seasons with CMC in Carolina. “This is a very versatile, young football player that we really think is going to be a guy that can get on the field for us early and contribute.”

Ridiculous comparisons aside, it’s encouraging to hear Rivera say Gibson is capable of making a rookie-year impact. He’s definitely 1 of the more intriguing prospects in the 2020 draft class.

Prospect profile

After spending 2 years at East Central Community College, Gibson transferred to Memphis. He tallied just 6 touches in his first year with the Tigers before breaking out as an offensive weapon this past season. Gibson caught 38 balls for 735 yards (19.3 YPC) and 8 TDs, while adding 369 yards and 2 scores on 33 carries (11.2 YPC). Pro Football Focus charted him with an elite 33 broken tackles on his 71 touches. Gibson was also a special-teams dynamo, averaging a big 28.0 yards with 1 TD on 23 kick returns and winning Conference USA Special Teams Co-Player of the Year.

Then he went to the Combine and blazed a 4.39-second 40 time at 6’0 and 228 pounds and earned an 83rd-percentile SPARQ score.
