Alexander Johnson Player Overview

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Johnson opened 2019 buried on Denver's depth chart. He played 0 defensive snaps through the first 4 games, appearing only on special teams. Johnson got his starting shot only after Josey Jewell and Justin Hollins had faltered, and the run defense on whole struggled mightily. Once he got that shot, though, he seized it.

Johnson finished the year graded 7th among all 177 non-edge LBs by Pro Football Focus. He rated 2nd among that group in run D and tied for 19th in coverage. Johnson didn't rate nearly so well as a pass-rusher, but he produced coming forward in college. Johnson delivered 8.5, 8.5 and 9 tackles for loss in his 3 starting seasons at Tennessee, topping 100 total tackles in each of those years. Johnson's 425 career tackles rank 2nd in school history.

Unfortunately, that run ended early when Johnson faced rape charges late in his senior year. He got suspended from the team and had his 2015 invite to the Scouting Combine rescinded. But he was eventually acquitted in 2018 and then signed with the Broncos.

Johnson should hit 2020 as the clear starter next to Todd Davis at ILB and sure looks like a 3-down player. Playing under longtime defensive stalwart HC Vic Fangio and experience DC Ed Donatell ensures Johnson of being properly deployed.

This looks like a high-upside fantasy asset likely to come at a draft discount.
