6 Rookies With Troubling Injury Histories

By Jared Smola 8:04am EDT 4/24/18

NFL rookies are much more like used cars than brand new ones. The vast majority have been playing ball for years and years. They all have different mileage on them. And they have different amounts of damage.

Understanding rookie injury histories is important for NFL teams, fans and fantasy football players. So we’ve run the Carfax report on this year’s skill-position rookies. Here are the 6 guys with the most worrisome injury histories.

Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

The hot rumor in NFL circles is that Rosen might drop further than expected in the draft. His injury history might be 1 of the reasons why.

Rosen missed the final 6 games of the 2016 season with a "soft tissue" right (throwing) shoulder injury that required surgery.Even more worrisome are the 2 separate concussions that forced him to miss a pair of games this past year.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

Rosen’s concussions have been thoroughly covered by the draft media.Mayfield’s seem to be flying under radar. That’s probably because they occurred back in 2015.But it doesn’t make them any less alarming, especially since they came over a 6-week span.

Mayfield also missed 4 games during his freshman season at Texas Tech with a right knee injury.

Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

Allen has had a pair of injuries to his most important limb: His right arm.

He broke his right clavicle in 7 different places in his 1st career start at Wyoming. Then he missed the final 2 regular-season games this past year with a sprained A/C joint in his throwing shoulder.

Sony Michel, RB, Georgia

Michel suffered a torn ACL as a high school sophomore in 2011.He missed 5 games during his debut season at Georgia — 4 with a broken shoulder blade and 1 with an ankle injury. He missed another contest with a sprained ankle this past year. It’s a concerning number of injuries for a guy who never topped 218 carries in a college season.

It’s also worth noting that Michel fractured his left forearm in an ATV accident in 2016.

Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama

This dude doesn’t lack for size of athleticism. But his Alabama career was a disappointment due to a rash of injuries. He tore his ACL in April 2015 before he ever played a game for the Tide.A sprained knee cost him 2 games in 2016.And he broke his right leg in the 2016 National Championship.

That all followed a high school career that included a broken ankle (2010), torn ACL (2011) and high-ankle sprain (2012).

Anthony Miller, WR, Memphis

Miller’s injury history is short but concerning.A shoulder injury forced him to take a medical redshirt and miss the entire 2014 campaign.

Then in his final game at Memphis, he suffered a Jones fracture in his right foot. That’s an injury that’s caused ongoing issues for WRs such as Julio Jones, Dez Bryant and Sammy Watkins.

It’ll be something to monitor as Miller starts practicing and playing with his NFL squad.
